If White continues quietly, I intended simply to double on the f-file and play ... Nxe4!. White’s desperate response allows a 19th century king hunt, much like my similar chase in Game 23—and we’ll see yet another in the notes to Game 45!

18 0-0 h5!

Now that we know where the white king lives, material no longer matters.

19 Bxc6 Qxc6 20 Qxg5 Bxe4 21 Nh4

If 21 Nxe4 Nxe4 22 Qxg7 Rxf3 with a winning attack.

21 ... hxg4!

A piece is certainly not too much to sacrifice in such a position.

22 Qxg7 Bd3

The bishop is a useful attacking piece, but the white rook may be an even more useful defender—so I would be willing to exchange, especially in view of White’s sleeping queenside pieces. In general, a black rook should defeat two pieces here (as in many Tal games) if two files open on the kingside.

Finally, though I didn’t consciously think of this during the game, my move echoes Keres’ 17 ... Bd3! from Game 34.

23 Re1 g3!!
